About the theater
Founded in 1934 as the first Kazakh musical theater. The modern building, designed by architect N. A. Kruglov and completed in 1941, is an architectural landmark of Almaty. In 1945, the theater was named after the great poet Abai. After reconstruction (1995–2000), the theater retained its Empire style, complemented by elements of national ornament. Today, the Abai Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theater is the leading theater in Kazakhstan and one of the largest cultural institutions in Eurasia, uniting stage masters and young talents.
